Rice Wellness Program

Rice University and Methodist Wellness Services have partnered to offer Rice employees a path to better health in 2009! The challenge is also sponsored by the university Benefits Committee, the Staff Advisory Committee and Human Resources.

The program is a multi-tiered program that offers Health Risk Assessments, Nutrition and Exercise Seminars, and Skin Cancer Screening Programs.

Although we want to encourage participation in the entire program, faculty and staff may choose to only participate in select activities. The goal is to help faculty and staff enjoy better health, increased energy levels and a renewed spirit.

If you have questions regarding any of the wellness programs listed below please contact Mariela Molina-Smith at x3538.

Healthy Lifestyle Screenings

The next Healthy Lifestyle Screenings will be held in the Fall of 2009 on September 16, 18, & 23 in the Grand Hall.

Wellness Coaching

If you want to make healthy lifestyle changes but aren’t sure where to begin, a personal wellness coach may be your answer. Wellness Coaching goes beyond general health tips, giving you a personalized plan and ongoing support to help you reach your goals.

People with multiple risk factors for heart disease, as determined by the Healthy Lifestyle Screening above, will be invited for FREE coaching sessions throughout 2009.  If you are interested in the Rice Wellness Coaching program, please participate in the Healthy Lifestyle Screening program or contact Mariela Molina-Smith (x3538).

Wellness Seminar Series

Each month we will focus on a specific wellness topic that is beneficial to you.  We would love to hear what topics interest you.

Contact Mariela Molina-Smith (x3538) to provide input.

Skin Cancer Screenings

Rice offers FREE skin cancer screenings to benefits-eligible faculty & staff on several dates throughout the summer.

The skin cancer screenings will be held on the following dates in the Student Health & Wellness Center:

Friday June 19, 2009 from 7:30 am-4:00 pm

Friday June 26, 2009 from 7:30 am-4:00 pm

Friday July 24, 2009 from 7:30 am-4:00 pm

Friday August 7, 2009 from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

To schedule an appointment contact Mariela Molina-Smith (x3538).

One of every three cancers diagnosed in the United States this year will be skin cancer. The risk is greatest in the summer, because ultraviolet rays from the sun are the main cause of skin cancer.

Fortunately, the most common types of skin cancers have a cure rate of more than 95% if they are detected and treated early.  Even better, almost all skin cancers can be prevented simply by protecting the skin from the sun's harmful rays.

The appointments are with a dermatologist in the Rice Student Health & Wellness Center (located next to the Brown Master's House and Brown College)

NOTE:  You will need to disrobe for the dermatologist to examine your skin.  However, you will be in an exam room with complete privacy.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers is at Rice! Meetings are held on Mondays starting June 29, 2009 at 11:30 am (weigh-in starts at 11:15) in room 217 of the McNair Hall (Jones School). Rice will subsidize half of the cost of meetings for benefits-eligible faculty and staff, so the total cost of the 17-week program is $87.50 (payable in three installment checks of $29.50, $29.00 and $29.00).  For more information, please read the Weight Watchers Q&A for details.

To enroll, you may go to an open house (the last meeting of the current session) on Monday, June 22nd in McNair 217.  You may also go directly to the first meeting on June 29th in room 217 of McNair Hall.

You may enter the program at any time (at a prorated cost) -- simply go to a meeting for more information.
